Free or paid WebHost? Get either today.
Free or Paid Hosting
Days 9-12 of the 30 days to internet riches series
This will absolutely come down to do you or don’t you have funds. If you can afford it then absolutely get your own domain. I use hostgator and have found them to be very reliable and they do have the ability to host more than one domain in your current pricing plan.
When going paid - some considerations
Does it have development support?
Any hosting company worth their salt should be offering you the following
CGI
.htaccess
PHP
MySqyl
Python
cron jobs
Ruby on Rails
I would recommed you look for fantastico as an option for auto install, you can save hours on the technical side of things with this tool.
Databases
Most things you will want to host will require databases are you limited in this area, it may hamper your growth later.
Reliability
Look for as close to 100% uptime as possible the web is much more stable than it was previously and if you suffer downtime your visitors will not see what they came for and may see you as a fly by night act that it untrustworthy.
As they have them all I’m sticking with hostgator. Click the image below to see their site, they offer some top notch tutorials on ftp which have moved me from relying on others to doing most of my own web authoring.
No Money no Problem
There are tons of free webhosts out there where you can host your domain or a subdomain for free.
However they have limitations.
I’ve used weebly
Nothing is perfect if you use a service such as weebly.com you can avoid carrying advertising for others but rather than having www.yourdomain.com you would have the website title www.yourdomain.weebly.com.
I’ve used squidoo
Similar issues to weebly although your also tied here to a standard page type and you must create a profile page that will show any other content that you have hosted with squidoo. In this case you will create “a lens” and it will be located at a url which looks like this www.squidoo.com/yourlensname
There are lots more
If you do a google search for free web host you’ll find one no problem but you will more than likely have to carry adverting of some sort for their site. Do not let this stop you from getting started.
